It is a fact that parasites of all kinds are attracted to your dog. After all, what’s not to love? Your pet provides a warm, furry environment, as well as a public transportation system for the host. In the summer, when we all spend more time outdoors, parasites tend to come out in force, hungry and looking for a place to set up shop. Your dog is the perfect spot for these creatures to settle down and dig in–quite literally. Treating your dog for these pests is important for the health and comfort of your pet, and some parasites can also be passed onto the human members of the family, making it even more essential that we keep these creatures at bay.
Here at Emerald City Animal Hospital, we have already seen a marked increase in cases of hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms! These can all cause serious disease in your pets, including, but of course not limited to, nausea, vomiting, inappetance, diarrhea, and lethargy. Some infestations can even be deadly if allowed to continue for too long. We have already had to hospitalize patients this season for severe infestation!
As bad as this all sounds, it's super easy to prevent intestinal parasite diseases! Just keep your pets on monthly heartworm/intestinal parasite prevention, and a flea and tick preventative.
Our recommended preventatives include Heartgard, Interceptor, or Revolution (for small puppies). You can purchase these at our office any time as long as your pet has an up to date Heartworm Test. Call our office if you have questions!
